All live on Earth starts with living soil. Half of the world’s species live within soils, soils regulate the Earth’s water cycling and climate. Humans have only (re)discovered the role of living soil within the last two decades, and our insights on how to revitalize soil is growing rapidly. Spoiler alert: you may be surprised how low-tech it is.
Come discover what soil actually is, how it’s created, and how we can all take better care of it – as farmers, home and landowners, gardeners, and in our professions. The workshop will be lead by Kristine Hammel, Owner-operator of Persephone Market Garden. When Kristine started to understand soil stewardship, she transformed her farm and put soil stewardship first. The garden is now healthier, more productive, and more resilient to both drought and floods. It is more biodiverse and more climate resilient. This transformation resulted in less pest pressure for her crops, better food flavour, and more overall vibrancy. Once this knowledge opened Kristine’s eyes, there was no turning back. In this workshop, Kristine wants to share her experience and help participants to open their eyes as well.
About Kristine
Kristine operates Persephone Market Garden with her family. After growing up on a dairy farm in southwestern Ontario, she spent a while in the city and abroad. But her roots drew her back to the land. In 2009, she started growing vegetables with her Mom. Since 2010, she has been growing her farm, while having 3 kids, and supporting the launch of Eat Local Grey Bruce, including through 3 years on the board.
